Project Title
Making Charts and Graphs Using Microsoft Excel - Beginners
Introduction
I teach spreadsheet application workshops. Often, through the
course of these classes, students have voiced concerns about
going home and not being able to remember what needed to be done
to create charts and graphs. The purpose of this project is to
create a computer based tutorial, which will assist my workshop
students at home. The completed project will be a PowerPoint
tutorial that instructs students on the basic concepts of creating
charts and graphs using Microsoft Excel.
Statement of Need
Through the course of teaching several one-day workshops on Microsoft
Excel and having prior knowledge of what it is like to be a student
in a one-day workshop, I have determined a need for supplemental
materials. The pace of these workshops is usually quick, with
a lot of information being given in a short amount of time. Those
who attend workshops are often hesitant about being able to duplicate
their classroom performances once they return home to their personal
computers. Handouts are often not enough. I have determined that
those who attend my workshops would benefit from a turorial that
instructs, step-by-step, on how to create charts and graphs.
A program such as this would give those who need support a resource
to reference if they do not feel confident with their skills.
Further, a program such as this one would also benefit those
who need a review of the skills that are taught during my workshops.
Target Audience
Adults, who are for the most part teachers, will be the target
audience of this tutorial. A majority of the adults are novice
users of Microsoft Excel, who participate in my one-day workshops.
Goals and Objectives
Goal
To create a PowerPoint tutorial that will support my teaching
of Excel Spreadsheet applications
Objectives
1. I will create an instructional tutorial that will focus on
how to make charts and graphs using Microsoft Excel.
2. I will create an instructional tutorial that in geared for
a target audience of beginners.
3. I will post this tutorial on the web.
4. I will tutorial will be burned onto CDs.
Assessment
I believe that I have created a CBI program that will accurately
and effectively instruct beginning users of Microsoft Excel on
how to create charts and graphs. The CD-ROM will enable users
to access this tutorial at their convenience as will it's excessibility
on the web.
Instructional Strategy
Concept-Application
Initial Presentation: The learner will view definitions
and model examples as provided in the tutorial.
Integration Strategy: The learner will compile data
on a spreadsheet and create a column chart.
Equipment
A computer with a CD-ROM or internet access will be needed in
order to run this PowerPoint tutorial.
Evaluation
I believe that this program will benefit my workshop students.
The program is easy to follow and guides the beginning user of
Microsoft Excel. I have field-tested this program and the reviews
have been positive. Reviewers have commented that they liked
the appearance, directions are clearly stated, easy to follow
and it will prove to be a functional multimedia tool.
